I slept too early the last night and wake up very early in the morning, We’ll be checking out from Hostel 639 today and continue our journey away from London for 5 days.. We went down for breakfast again and deposited our heavy luggage at the hotel for a fee of £1.50 per day. We rush to the Waterloo station again for a train to Salisbury to visit to one of the Heritage spot, The Stonehenge. The train journey will take about 2 hrs plus to reach to Salisbury, we bought some sandwich to eat on board.
As the train move away from the city, a view of greeneries is easily seen along the way… Salisbury is at Witshire. We reach Salisbury at 10.15 am and Join the Stonehenge tour by the Wilts & Dorset company, the tour cost us £17.50 inclusive of entrance fee to Stonehenge… You just can’t explore alone to Stonehenge cause there is no public buses to there…
The tour starts at the train stations, go pass Old Sarum and bring you to Stonehenge then back to the train station…
The tour didn’t bring us to Old Sarum as stated in the itinerary, Old Sarum is a huge earthwork raised in about 500BC by Iron age settlers and later occupied by the Romans, Saxons and most importantly, Normans. It has then abandoned and fell into ruin.
Stonehenge , is the most sophisticated stone circle in the world. It evolved from a simple bank and ditch in the Neolithic period, some 5000 years ago, to a very sophisticated stone circle build on the axis of the Midsummer sunrise. The bluestones were brought 240 miles from the Preseli mountains in Wales. Just how they got them to this isolated place remain a mystery. It has also been an astronomical observatory or used for sacred rituals linked to the sun, successfully crops or even the dead.
But well, I just went there because it is one of the world heritage! Nothing much you can see except for the ruin of stones remaining there… and of course, endless green fields… some family bring over their dogs for some country side camping here… Other than the stones, what attracted me is the fat sheep here.. they are like living isolated from the outside world, not knowing that one day they’ll be slaughter and becomes somebody’s meal.
The wind here is chilling even the sun is shinning there…. But it does give you a relaxing feel being in a endless green fields.. There is a souvenir shops there, thought of buying some magnets but too expensive!!!
We catch the bus going back to the Salisbury town at 12.40… We choose to get down at the town for some walk since our train to Bath is only depart 2.41. We walk at the Debenhams store but not manage to get anything, shops for some toys for Howard at a toy shop.. We then walk into a not so attractive looking shops, but they sells some nice stuff.. At 2.15, we decide to walk back to the train stations, by not knowing the correct directons, it took us 30 mints, with half walk and half jog to be back in time for the train to Bath..
The train reach Bath Spa station at 3.40pm. I took out my maps and walk for about 15 minutes to our Hostel. Our YMCA, Bath hostel is just located opposites of Hilton, Bath, a small and dark staircase will lead you to the hostel.
The YMCA seems a lot better that Hostel 639, at least we have a decent room, but shared bathroom. We quickly check in and put down our luggage. We have to take a short break at the hotel and start to venture into the bath town at 4.30… But it almost getting dark outside.
Bath looks like an ancient town with yellowish building through out the town… No high rise building, no colorful buildings also… It gets all dark at 5pm, and shop close too… it just too dark and we have to give up our plans to visits to some place and settle down for early dinner….We stop at Wilson street, where the Old post office building located for dinner. We chose to dine in another Japanese restaurant call the Wagamama, I ordered a chicken stew rice and mum ordered a Fried Gohan (Japanese Fried Rice) the portion is so big… the fried rice filled one big soup bowl… as expected, mum can’t finish…
After the dinner, we have to go to the only shops open for some walk, the Waitrose, a local grocery market… We try to spend as much time to explore there, got some drinks and some really good Chocolates for my friends and BB for souvenir…
We are back to the hostel real early, at 6.30pm….Mum wanna get a rest while I go online to send a mail to BB…
Oh, I wake up in the middle of the night and eat the cup noodle I’ve been craving for days… It cost almost RM 10 for a cup noodle and not nice at all!!!!!
